Chris Sutton has shared the sneaky feeling he has concerning Anthony Gordon as Newcastle United prepare to travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Thursday.

Sutton was speaking to BBC Sport as he tipped the Magpies to win 2-1 on Merseyside following their victory over Manchester United at the weekend.

Anthony Gordon was the star of the show for Eddie Howe’s side. The 22-year-old scored his sixth league goal of the campaign at St James’ Park to bag the winner.

Chris Sutton backs Anthony Gordon to shine against Everton
Of course, that is particularly significant as he is preparing to return to his former club this week. Gordon is in line to make his first start against the Toffees since leaving in the January transfer window.

He took some time to get going on Tyneside, but Gordon has been outstanding this season. And with that, Chris Sutton believes that he will add to his tally of 11 goal contributions.

“This should be a really good game. between two teams who will throw everything at it,” he told BBC Sport as he predicted a 2-1 Newcastle win.

“Everton’s home form is not great, but they have total belief in their approach under Sean Dyche and they play like they share the same cause.

“But Newcastle’s unity is also great to see – they are all in with Eddie Howe and fully invested in his playing style as well.

“I was tempted to go for a draw but with former Everton winger Anthony Gordon going back to Goodison Park, I have a sneaky feeling he might make the difference.”

Newcastle may well need someone to step up to guide them to victory. Sean Dyche’s side have been incredibly difficult to beat of late, losing just one of their last six games in all competitions.

While they were heavily beaten by Manchester United, you did get the sense that Alejandro Garnacho’s outrageous early goal knocked the wind out of the club’s sails on a day where emotions were running high.

But Newcastle have been excellent since the international break. The 1-0 scoreline flattered Manchester United at the weekend, in truth. And they were so unfortunate to not beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

They now face Everton and Tottenham away from home before hosting AC Milan in their final group game in Europe. So there is an opportunity for the side to prove a real point.
