Despite having quite different upbringings, Paul Mullin and Humphrey Ker, the director of Wrexham, appear to have a lot of regard for one another.
Consequently, what happened?
As the new owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s eyes and ears, Ker was sent to Wrexham, and he has since played a significant role in the club’s ascent. The club’s lucky striker, who was gushing about the guy who risked his career to bring him to North Wales, appears to have captured the hearts and minds of everyone at Wrexham. Mullin thought of the iconic scene from Welcome to Wrexham, where Ker, praising Wrexham’s executive director in his newly released book My Wrexham Story, asked Reynolds and McElhenney to go all out for Mullin.
Paul Mullin’s remarks regarding Harvey Ker
The fact is that Humphrey is a great guy, as Mullin put it. “He is adored by all members of the club, but especially by the players. To be honest, Wrexham would cease to exist without Humphrey Ker. Though he has a degree from Eton and is an experienced stage performer, he is actually a very natural fit for the team and is constantly willing to lend a hand, check on the players, and generally be a really positive presence.
“Humphrey is the epitome of Wrexham FC; if it weren’t for his brief conversation with his friend Rob, the team may still be struggling in the National League. Humphrey was a major factor in getting me to the Racecourse as well.
“On camera, he risks all to reassure the club that signing me will lead to a promotion. When it really happened that night, I was powerless to resist. I congratulated him, saying, “You’ve just saved your job!”
THE LARGER IMAGE
Shortly after Reynolds and McElhenney take over the team, the reserved Ker makes his introduction to the players in a well-known opening scene from Welcome to Wrexham. The team laughs as Ker exits the room, leaving the clear impression that he won’t fit in with the raucous world of professional football in the lower leagues. However, Mullin’s kind remarks highlight how much Ker is responsible for Wrexham’s success and how much the players value him.
FUTURE ACTIONS FOR MULLIN AND KER?
In addition to highlighting his audacious request to go all out to bring the striker to the Racecourse Ground, Ker will be hoping that Mullin’s goals may propel Wrexham to their second consecutive promotion.
