According to a Daily Mail article, Wrexham won’t have to hire a new goalkeeper for the winter.
The fact that Arthur Okonkwo, an injured Arsenal loanee, is only expected to be out for a few weeks rather than months gives Wrexham, who are vying for promotion from League Two, more breathing room.
During the Red Dragons’ 2-2 draw with Harrogate Town last month, 22-year-old Okonkwo suffered a jaw injury.
He will now have “minor” surgery before making a comeback, according to The Daily Mail, and his current loan club won’t be “forced” to sign a replacement during the January transfer window.
Modification of the Wrexham plan
While their top goalkeeper heals, Wrexham does have some helpful depth in their goalkeeping corps. Luke McNicholas has performed well in the games he has featured in since signing from Sligo Rovers in the summer, and Mark Howard is a very experienced goalkeeper in the Football League.
After being promoted from the National League to the fourth division last season, Phil Parkinson’s team has adjusted to life there well.
The Welsh team is aiming for consecutive promotions to League One and is presently sitting in second position with 37 points after their first 20 games of the current campaign.
As Wrexham gets ready for their next away game against Forest Green Rovers this weekend, they are one point above fourth-place Mansfield Town and five points behind league leaders Stockport County.
Since temporarily switching from Arsenal, Okonkwo has performed admirably in goal, and he is anxious to get back on the field as soon as it is safe to do so. He began playing for Arsenal in 2009 and has previously spent time at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz away from the Emirates Stadium.
