This morning (Saturday, December 9), flooding at an East Sussex railway station prevented trains from passing through for a short while.

Just hours before Brighton & Hove Albion is scheduled to play Burnley at the nearby Amex Stadium (3pm kickoff), Southern Rail announced at 9.45am that the line was stopped at Falmer Station.

“Services are unable to run through Falmer due to flooding at present,” stated a post on X (previously Twitter). Around 10:20, first reaction personnel is anticipated on the scene.

Services between Brighton and Lewes were unable to operate while the event was still continuing. Local bus routes in Brighton and Hove were accepting tickets.

By 11.15am, trains were operating again following the arrival of more response personnel. According to a Southern update, trains can now go via Falmer to connect Brighton and Lewes; the lines have reopened. As we get everything back to normal, there’s a chance that some services will still be delayed or changed. This occurred after Southern Rail announced that it will be operating a “amended timetable with fewer trains” due to strike action, reminding supporters heading to the Amex Stadium this afternoon to “travel early and be prepared to queue.

“Due to recent strikes, there will be disruption to the train service with half the normal service in operation, so if you’re planning on using the train to get to the match, please travel early and expect longer queues pre- and post-match,” a Brighton & Hove Albion spokeswoman stated. This Saturday when we play Burnley at The Amex, all home and away fans can travel for free on buses and trains within our travel zone on production of their digital matchday or season ticket.”

Additionally, “closing all lines” is being done by engineers between Brighton and Littlehampton. Between Brighton and Littlehampton via Worthing, buses will take the place of trains.
