Burton Albion have appointed first-team coach Gary Mills as the caretaker boss following the departure of Dino Maamria on Sunday night, as confirmed by a statement on the club’s official website.
Maamria was let go by the Brewers on Saturday evening, following a run of six league matches without a victory, culminating in a 2-1 loss to Stevenage at home on Saturday afternoon.
The Tunisian was appointed in early September last year after the dismissal of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, having been the Dutchman’s assistant manager during his stint in the dugout.
Mills joined the club as a coach in September of this year from Coventry City where he was the Lead Professional Development Phase Coach.
The 42-year-old has held coaching roles at clubs across the pyramid, including MK Dons, Wrexham and Kings Lynn, as well as his time at the CBS Arena.
In a statement on the club’s website, Burton chairman Ben Robinson said: “It’s always a sad time when a manager leaves the club under these circumstances and we are disappointed that it didn’t work out as we had hoped with Dino Maamria.”
“Dino was with the club for three years as assistant manager and manager and we want to thank him for what he did last season, galvanising the team in January with the signings he made that moved us away from relegation,” he added.
“I have asked Gary Mills to look after the first team on a caretaker basis while we decide the next best step forward for Burton Albion.”
The Staffordshire outfit are currently sat in 19th place in League One, having accumulated 20 points in 20 games. Their next match is away to playoff-hopefuls Oxford United this coming Saturday and Mills will likely be in charge for this fixture.
Mills is clearly a well-respected coach and Robinson has placed faith in him to help steady the ship. The Brewers’ season has been split into three segments so far, seeing them without a win in their first seven games, then go seven unbeaten, but now are without a win in their last six.
The newly appointed caretaker head coach will be hoping that it does not turn into a tale of three seven-game spells as he hopes to lift his team to victory this weekend away at the Kassam Stadium.
