Jamie Redknapp says the Newcastle players must quickly regroup around Kieran Trippier after his nightmare at Stanford Bridge.
The Magpies were two minutes from a first-ever away victory in a League Cup quarter-final when Mykhailo Mudryk pounced on a mistake by Trippier, whose header teed up the Ukrainian to score from just a few yards from goal and send the game to spot-kicks.
Trippier’s head was duly scrambled and it was no surprise when he missed in the penalty shootout.
Chelsea were buoyed by their escape and scored all four spot-kicks before Djordje Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie’s effort.
Afterwards Redknapp said: ‘I think you need a good team. I think everyone’s going to be getting around him making sure that he keeps his head up.
‘He’s a very experienced player, we looked at it 33 years of age is played in World Cups. He’s been a top professional.
‘I think in a way that you just have to do it yourself because he is one of the best Premier League players, one of the best professionals we’ve seen and it couldn’t happen.
‘If you think about all the good guys is certainly one of the best guys everybody that meets him everyone says what a great job he does. Top professional. It’s it’s going to be difficult for him because this is two or three games he’s got now but I’ve got no doubt we’ll get through it.
‘He’s just got to work hard and in training I think is going to be important for him. You know, good people around him as well.’
Karen Carney said: ‘If that was somebody else, Trippier would be the first person to get round them as an experienced leader. They’ve got to get around him now and just pick him up and you just got a sometimes that the best thing in football is the next game.’
