The most recent Premier League team to enter the competition to recruit Josh Brownhill, a midfielder for Burnley, is Everton.

The 28-year-old is reportedly the Toffees’ top target for the January transfer window, according to a report from FootballTransfers.

The aforementioned rumor follows links to Brownhill from Championship team Leicester City and other Premier League clubs prior to the winter window opening the following month.

The Mirror claims that Enzo Maresca’s Foxes are eager to sign the diligent star but will have to contend with fierce competition.

According to a Mirror source, Brownhill has always been a favorite of Wolves manager Gary O’Neill, who also happens to be anxious to bring Brownhill into the team.

Considering how frequently Brownhill has played for the Clarets this season, it is very unexpected to see him linked away from Burnley.

Brownhill has made 16 appearances in the Premier League this season, captaining the team on numerous occasions, after contributing significantly to the club’s promotion.

The 28-year-old’s current contract status is where things start to get intriguing, though.

Since Brownhill’s contract at Turf Moor expires in the summer of 2024, he is free to sign a pre-contract in January with any team.

Naturally, Leicester City’s prospects of getting promoted would greatly increase if they could manage to overcome fierce opposition and sign Brownhill in January.

To be clear, the club isn’t doing a terrible job of things right now.

Together with Ipswich Town, Enzo Maresca’s team is currently leading the Championship and has been one of the division’s two best teams.

The above table shows that the Foxes have a significant points advantage over Leeds, who are now in third place. If they continue on their current trajectory, automatic promotion is very much a possibility.

Brownhill, who scored seven goals and provided eight assists to help Burnley win a return to the top division in the previous season, would be a fantastic addition to an already formidable team.

As January approaches, it will be intriguing to watch Brownhill’s circumstances.
