Newcastle United transfer news as the Magpies will need to sort out these six contracts before they expire in the summer of 2025

While many will have their eyes on who Newcastle United will bring in during the January transfer window, those at St James’ Park will have to keep an eye on those that are currently at the club and negotiate new and current deals with them.

With the likes of Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles out of contract at the end of the season, it might seem imperative to bring those stars back but next summer is where a true changing of the guard at the Magpies could be seen.

There are six key stars that have been vital to manager Eddie Howe’s rebuilding of the club and their recent success, so here they are – the ones that Newcastle will be desperate to re-sign when the time comes.

By far one of, if not, the most important addition to Howe’s rebuilding of Newcastle, Kieran Trippier has been a staple of this revamped Magpies defensive line. In what has probably been the most impressive defence in the league over the past two years re-signing what’ll be a 34-year-old Trippier will still see him bring the side a wealth of experience.

Despite his growing age, it doesn’t appear he’s slowing down, with his ability to find perfect balls into the box or the accurate cross-field ping that the Magpies need to unlock an opponent’s defence still there at 33.

Callum Wilson

Wilson will be 33 by the time his current contract expires, and with the much younger Alexander Isak waiting in the wings, it’s unclear whether he’d be re-signed. Given that he’s already sharing significant minutes with the Swedish international and his openness about wanting to start more under Howe, it’s possible he sees out the rest of his contract and either enters free agency or the Magpies cash in while they can.

Having said that, his goal output numbers are still fantastic and if his involvement in the recent England squads have been anything to go by, he’s certainly a player that you’d want at your disposal if you wanted to consistently push for the top four places.

Joelinton

Before Howe’s arrival, Joelinton could’ve gone down as one of the worst Premier League signings of all time. A striker down on his luck that couldn’t find the back of the net if it slapped him in the face, the Brazilian international has seen one of the most impressive resurgences under the Englishman.

The 27-year-old’s career has been completely flipped on its head, now marking him as one of the most important pieces in the middle of the park for the Toon. This one is a no-brainer for Howe and company who will do everything they can in order to tie the star down to a new deal in the near future.

Sean Longstaff

In a similar vein to Joelinton, Sean Longstaff will no doubt be an important piece of the club’s future. He’s already highlighted his significance to the squad, even being handed the captain’s armband for the 3-0 Carabao Cup win at Old Trafford over Manchester United. A presence through the club’s academy system and up into the senior team, Longstaff could well become one of the faces of the Magpies in years to come.

Dan Burn

With injuries hampering him in recent weeks, Dan Burn’s involvement this season has seen a slight decline when compared to his importance in the last campaign. The introduction of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento over the last transfer window has also seen a hit to his minutes.

He’ll be 33 when the current contract expires, leaving little to the imagination about what could happen if either of the youngsters make a serious impression on Howe in the next 18 months.

Martin Dubravka

By far the likeliest on this list to see their contract left to expire, backup goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has already been loaned out to Man United last season after losing his place to England international Nick Pope. It’s unlikely that Howe keeps him on, but if he was to, it’d only be in a back-up role for the then-36-year-old. Howver, with Pope’s current injury, he’s shown he could still have a role to play.
