Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has poked fun at James McClean after the veteran scored the decisive goal in their side’s 1-0 win over Swindon Town.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Wrexham beat Swindon 1-0 thanks to McClean’s 13th minute strike at County Ground on Boxing Day in what was his first league goal for the Welsh club. The winger, who retired from international duty for Republic of Ireland this year, has a tonne of experience in the English Football League and his quality showed in this victory. After the match, Reynolds quipped that McClean was a “gutsy young striker” despite being 34.

WHAT RYAN REYNOLDS SAID

In an Instagram story, Reynolds wrote a caption under a picture of McClean celebrating his goal: “Who is this gutsy young striker we’ve signed out of Ireland??”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham have enjoyed a remarkable 2023. They got promoted out of the National League earlier this year after topping the table and now they are second in League Two. They are on track to achieve back-to-back promotions under manager Phil Parkinson and experienced players like McClean, on top of the first-rate ownership of Reynolds and fellow co-owner Rob McElhenney, may be key in making that possible.

WHAT NEXT?

Wrexham will end the year with an away trip to Walsall on December 29 in another League Two match. They start 2024 against fellow promotion chasers Barrow on January 1 before taking on Shrewsbury Town six days later in the FA Cup third round
