In addition to providing an update on Robin Olsen’s injuries, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery mentioned that we would try to add a goalkeeper this month or in the summer.
The 33-year-old has only made five appearances overall this season, and he has not been included in the starting lineup for our previous six Premier League games. He has also not been a major contributor to the team’s cover for Emiliano Martinez.
Young players Filip Marschall and Sam Proctor have been named on the bench in recent weeks as a result of his absence. While Emery seems to support them to step in if necessary, it is not ideal to have depth at such a critical position if Martinez were to develop an issue.
Thankfully, it doesn’t appear that Olsen will be out for very long. Despite his lackluster performance since joining the team, the Swedish international has improved this season, and it’s important that we have him available to rest Martinez if necessary.
Although I don’t think it will be for a long time, he is still hurt. Olsen should be accessible again in a few days or a week, according to Emery, as reported by BirminghamLive. “At this point, we have no plans to sign a new goalkeeper. Naturally, we are keeping an eye on a few goalies, but we are also considering a young keeper who could be able to come here and develop. We’ll wait till the next window if not.
It’s uncertain whether Olsen will be available for selection this weekend when we play Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, as it might be a game when Martinez should obviously take a break, or if it’s more probable that he’ll be added to the squad when we play Everton in the Premier League on
We’ll see if Olsen is one of the players who return because Villa only has one more game this month, against Newcastle United on January 30. This gives Villa time to rest, reorganize, and get players back to full health.
Regarding a new signing, Villa faces a challenging situation because of the dearth of playing time Martinez would have to deal with. However, if we can find a top prospect who can compete with Olsen and eventually move up the hierarchy before him, it will be interesting to see if the club moves forward.
