Leeds United’s decision to discontinue Djed Spence’s loan period makes a new defender a need. The position of full-back appears to be in dire need of adjustment prior to the start of the transfer window on February 1.
Are we losing a lot when Spence leaves? It seemed like a wise move to bring him in on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur last August.
However, Spence’s injuries interfered with his stay at Elland Road. He missed more than two months of work due to a knee issue. Spence, who assisted Nottingham Forest in gaining promotion to the Premier League in 2022, was never fully appreciated by Whites supporters.
Attack-minded Spence played a lot of left-back as well as his preferred right-back position. He did not play in their victory over Birmingham City on New Year’s Day.
“We would like to thank Djed for his efforts while at Elland Road and we wish him well for his future career,” a statement from United said. At his pre-game press conference this afternoon, manager Daniel Farke will undoubtedly face intense questioning on the club’s choice to activate Spence’s break clause and terminate his loan agreement.
On the right side of their defense, the Whites still have choices. Since October, Archie Gray, a gifted young player who plays mostly as a midfielder, has made an impression. They also have Sam Byram and Jamie Shackleton on their books.
However, there are worries regarding United’s thin depth at full-back. This term, Shackleton, Byram, and Firpo have all had significant injuries. It seems that under Farke, Ayling, who was recently linked to a move to Middlesbrough, has lost favor.
There is a lot of rumor that the Whites want to sign Bright Osayi-Samuel from Fenerbache. He can play wide or at right back. Josh Doig of Verona is reportedly another target.
In actuality, White people must make sure they don’t fall short in the race for advancement. To make sure they have all they need to last the entire game, the team must bring in more defensive cover.
