It is stated that West Ham United and Ajax have begun negotiations for Steven Bergwijn, with the aim of reaching a permanent agreement.
Football Insider claims that West Ham United has initiated negotiations with Ajax in an attempt to reach a deal for Steven Bergwijn. David Moyes may prefer to sign the 26-year-old Dutch forward, who has experience playing in England with Tottenham, in order to expand his offensive alternatives.

Is Steven Bergwijn returning to the Premier League?

Steven Bergwijn made a return to the Eredivisie, this time joining Ajax in the summer of 2022. In the 18 months there, the 26-year-old Dutch attacker regained his form and banished the blues he had experienced at Tottenham before.

His tally of 24 goals and 9 assists in 65 games for Ajax represents a decent return, but the Dutch giants could soon contemplate losing the winger. West Ham are interested in Bergwijn as David Moyes plots a move to improve his attacking options.

Moyes does not seem satisfied with the likes of Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals, who primarily play as the left winger. Hence, he wants a direct replacement for either star and has identified Bergwijn as the man to do so.

West Ham have already opened talks with Ajax for a loan or a permanent transfer of the 26-year-old Dutch attacker. Bergwijn might weigh up his options as he might feel the need to prove himself in England after the failed stint at Tottenham.

West Ham United’s January plans

West Ham United are eager to strengthen several areas of their squad and have already identified some of their targets. Moyes will focus his efforts on bringing a new defender after Thilo Kehrer’s departure, while an attacker remains the priority.

The Hammers had links to Serhou Guirassy, but the Stuttgart star continues to attract the interest of some top clubs owing to his modest £15 million release clause. So far, media reports have indicated mainly their need for a striker, but the Bergwijn chase shows Moyes wants a left winger as well.

Salernitana’s Boulaye Dia is also a target, and Moyes might feel getting the Serie A attacker might prove fruitful. However, he, too, is a striker target and probably a contingent option in case they cannot land top targets like Guirassy.
