It was a great night at the Emmys for the Welcome to Wrexham crew and Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney said thank you to the community for allowing it to happen

The hit docuseries ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ won four Emmy Awards on Sunday night, and Wrexham AFC owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney sent a special thank you to the Welsh town.

The series won big at the presentation as they received Emmys for best unstructured reality series, directing, cinematography and picture editing. The show is now in its second season after first airing in August 2022, and has put the football club on the map with millions of new fans supporting the team after falling in love with the series.

Reynolds and McElhenney have transformed the club since purchasing it back in 2020, with Wrexham now back in the Football League after 15 years in the fifth tier. The second season of the docuseries shows their dramatic promotion to League Two, and the owners thanked the town for allowing them to tell their story.

“Thank you to the town of Wrexham and @Wrexham_AFC for allowing us to witness your story and tell it,” Reynolds wrote on X. “This has been the greatest privilege of my life. Thank you #EmmyAwards for the honour and thank you @FXNetworks, @hulu, @DisneyPlus.”

Reynolds and McElhenney couldn’t make it to the awards ceremony, but did send a video to present after ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ won the Emmy. McElhenney then reposted the video on social media. “Wow, an Emmy, what an incredible honour,” McElhenney said.

“There are so many people to thank, I have been waiting for this moment for 16 years, so I’ve got a lot to say.” However, he was then cut off by Deadpool, a superhero played by Reynolds. While acting as Deadpool, Reynolds added: “Mr Lively couldn’t be here to accept this broken Emmy, so he sent me on his behalf.

“First and foremost, Wrexham, we love you. Thank you for letting Rob and the other guy tell your story. Cymru am byth, b******. I’d also like to thank The Academy for this honour and for not asking us to attend the televised awards show with the real celebrities. I’d also like to thank FX and Disney for their support and in exchange, Mr Lively promises not to f*** up my next movie.”

Reynolds and McElhenney have fallen in love with Wrexham, and regularly fly over from the United States to support their team. They’ve also done a lot for the local community, and have even bought a park off the council with plans to renovate it and open bars and restaurants.

The Hollywood actors are invested in Wrexham for the long-term, and have aspirations of getting them into the Premier League one day. They’re on course to seal back-to-back promotions as they’re currently third in League Two, and they advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 away win against Shrewsbury on Sunday.
