In order to focus on the NFL draft, the standout wide receiver will forgo his final year of eligibility.

According to a report from Chip Brown of Horns247 on Monday, Texas Longhorns wide receiver AD Mitchell is anticipated to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. He will leave the Forty Acres after one season after being transferred from the Georgia Bulldogs.

Following two national championships with Georgia and touchdown receptions in every College Football Playoff game, the 6’4″, 196-pound Missouri City wide receiver transferred to Texas. Mitchell led the club in touchdowns and yards per catch during his time in burnt orange.

Mitchell solidified his reputation as a big-play pass receiver at Texas by scoring touchdowns and key first downs in crucial situations. In addition, his performance gave teammate wide receiver Xavier Worthy a much-needed threat.

Mitchell hauled in 55 receptions for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns throughout the season. Mitchell’s easy transition into the offense was a major factor in the Longhorns’ Big 12 victory and their first-ever trip to the College Football Playoffs; his touchdown reception against Alabama in the fourth quarter sealed the victory and was a season high point.

The departure of Mitchell completely alters the outlook for Texas next season — losing a sure-handed wide receiver with big-time, big-play ability puts the next Texas offense into a tough spot given the departures of wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington and tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, which will thrust Houston transfer Matthew Golden and inexperienced Longhorns such as Johntay Cook and Ryan Wingo into much greater roles next season.
