FC Utrecht are hoping to seal a deal to bring Sam Lammers back to the Eredivisie today but there will not be an option-to-buy clause in the contract of the Rangers forward.

At any club, a tally of four goals or assists from 31 appearances would be hugely disappointing. More so at a Rangers team who are used to dominating possession, at least domestically, while rattling off an impressive run of results under their highly-rated head coach Philippe Clement.

Almost every member of the Gers squad has gone up a gear since Clement replaced Mick Beale in the Ibrox dugout. Sam Lammers, however, is the exception to that particular rule, the £3.5 million summer signing from Atalanta as underwhelming now as he was under the man tipped to reunite with him south of the border at Sunderland.

The Black Cats have been linked with Lammers recently. The expectation is, however, that he will be an FC Utrecht player by the end of the week. Perhaps even by the end of the day.

Sam Lammers set for imminent Rangers exit

De Telegraaf report that Utrecht are hoping to have a deal signed and sealed in the coming hours, with Lammers set to touch down in the cathedral city before undergoing a medical. The one-time PSV Eindhoven and Heerenveen attacker will only join on a straightforward loan deal, without an option or an obligation-to-buy clause in his contract.

This is because Utrecht can only spend a maximum of around £1.5 million on new acquisitions. And, as underwhelming as he has been in Glasgow, Rangers are in no mood to accept a £2 million loss just yet on a player who put pen to paper only six months ago.

An Ibrox future may still be on the cards

Rangers may be hoping that Lammers can rediscover the form he showed at Heerenveen back in 2018/19 after returning to familiar surroundings, boosting his confidence ahead of a return to Ibrox next summer. Or, on the other hand, boosting his price-tag for a club looking to recoup much if not all of their £3.5 million investment.

Ridvan Yilmaz could also depart this month, amid interest from clubs in Italy and Turkey.

In terms of incomings, the Scottish giants appear to be prioritising a left-back this month. Owen Beck, Josh Doig, Kai Wagner and Fredrik Oppegard of PSV Eindhoven have been mentioned.

Reports linking Steven Alzate and Emmanuel Dennis with a mid-season switch to Glasgow have, however, been played down.
