Unai Emery is reportedly hopeful that Aston Villa will make at least one transfer in the January window this month.

The Villa Park side have been quiet in this market, with the Premier League title hopefuls yet to make any major moves with no big-name players departing the Birmingham-based club either.

Rumours have been there in recent weeks linking Villa with the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Zaha, though it appears that Emery wants a signing in a completely different position.

According to Birmingham Live, the Spanish coach is ‘hopeful’ that Villa sign a young goalkeeper this month, with Emery seemingly keen to plan his squad out for the future.

Emiliano Martinez is, of course, the undisputed no. 1 at Villa Park, yet at 31-years-old, the Villians would be wise to find a long-term replacement for the Argentine international now rather than later.

Indeed, securing such a transfer this month would be quite the move from Villa, though given how important such deal is, there’s every chance that this move is held off until the summer.

Aston Villa need to get this transfer right this year

Finding a long-term replacement for a player as important to Villa as Martinez is a transfer that Emery and his team will be afraid to get wrong.

The former Arsenal shot-stopper is one of the best in the world and has thrived at Villa Park since departing north London for Birmingham in 2021.

Yet for Villa, they are aware that Martinez will need replacing one day, and the Premier League title hopefuls can’t get this upcoming transfer wrong.

As a result, Villa need to ensure that the young goalkeeper they sign is as perfect an option as they can get, with plenty of players out there who could one day replace Martinez.
