Wrexham has set a January transfer challenge for Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, with Phil Parkinson acknowledging that the targets will be “hard to get.”
Consequently, what happened?
The Red Dragons, who won the National League pennant in an unprecedented fashion the previous season, have put a lot of effort into putting up a League Two team that is extremely competitive. Several players who are seen to be prepared for a higher level have been acquired, but at a significant financial cost.
PARKINSON’S MENTION
However, Parkinson stated that Wrexham is still searching for new players when asked if he would like to add in the winter window. The players we have identified or the player are obviously difficult to get, just as in any previous transfer window. It won’t be simple for them to enhance what we now have. We have a strong team, a fantastic team culture, and guys returning from injury. Is there anyone out there that we think could make that better? If so, are we able to close a deal? As usual, plates are spinning, and although discussions have taken place, nothing significant is about to happen.
THE LARGER IMAGE
Parkinson said that his team is beginning to show more interest in the fourth-tier standings after leading them to third place in the League Two table and a potential promotion bid. “At the start of the season it doesn’t have much relevance but when you get halfway and beyond then of course you are looking at the league table and looking where teams are and aware of it,” Parkinson said.
FUTURE PLANS FOR WREXHAM?
Reynolds and McElhenney have supported Parkinson and Co. whenever financial support is needed. Notable advancements have been made at SToK Racecourse both on and off the field, and a few more tweaks before the end of January might mean the difference between finishing in the top three in 2023–24 and having to settle for a play-off ticket.
