According to The Mirror, West Ham United is prepared to increase their pursuit of Sunderland forward Jack Clarke this month.

The Hammers are prepared to press forward in order to sign Clarke, who is valued at £20 million at the Stadium of Light, at the London Stadium, according to the newspaper outlet (January 13).

Given that the East Londoners revealed on Friday, January 12, that academy graduate Conor Coventry was leaving for Charlton Athletic, it is thought that they are under pressure to sign a homegrown player this month.

According to reports, Tottenham has a 25% sell-on clause for Clarke, thus Sunderland will probably have to drive a hard bargain for the player who is still essential to their slim chances of promotion.

Worth a shot

Before his disastrous transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, clubs and supporters were already accustomed to Clarke’s incredible gifts, so he’s definitely not one of those geniuses suddenly emerging on the scene.

He has, however, elevated his game since joining Sunderland, having already scored 13 goals this season after recording an incredible nine goals and twelve assists in the 2022–2023 campaign.

With players like Said Benrahma, Maxwel Cornet, and Pablo Fornals all rumored to be leaving West Ham United in January, Clarke would be a great option for David Moyes to pursue given his age, potential, homegrown status, and talent.

Furthermore, it is not impossible that the former Tottenham striker would be lured by the opportunity to play in the Premier League and Europe, where he may feel he has unfinished business.

Given their erratic play under new manager Michael Beale, Sunderland’s chances of making the playoffs are getting smaller by the week, which could influence Clarke’s choice. However, the Black Cats will probably expect more than the £20 million.

At the London Stadium, it has always been best to sign homegrown Championship players. Jarrod Bowen is one example of this from his time when he moved from Hull City, but it is unlikely that the Irons will be willing to pay a high salary at this time.
