For the duration of the 2023–24 season, Kalvin Phillips, a midfielder for Manchester City, has signed a loan deal with West Ham United. Since joining City in the summer of 2022 after leaving Leeds United, Phillips has played very little for the team, and this season he has played just 318 minutes of club football.
The treble-winners were willing to let Phillips go on loan this month, and teams interested in signing him in the January transfer window included Newcastle United and Juventus.
Though City will probably be open to offers in the summer, the 28-year-old has joined West Ham on loan for the duration of the season. The contract does not appear to include a buyout option.
“I’m really happy to be here,” Phillips, who will represent West Ham with the number 11 shirt, stated. “As there has always been a lot of conjecture about my transferring to West Ham, I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m excited to be a part of the Club’s second half of the season because there is so much to look forward to.”
“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season.”
“We are really pleased to bring a player of Kalvin’s caliber to West Ham United,” manager David Moyes continued.
He is someone we have long admired, and we think he will give our team more strength and competition. Kalvin is a midfield player for the England national team with track record in the Premier League. We’re thrilled to have him join the team and are eager to collaborate with him.”
Phillips joins West Ham, who are presently in sixth place in the Premier League and have advanced to the Europa League round of sixteen. Despite Declan Rice’s British record-breaking sale to Arsenal last summer, Moyes’ team has been on the rise this season. However, in recent weeks, they have demonstrated a need for midfield reinforcements.
Gareth Southgate will also be trying to keep Phillips at the top of his mind as Euro 2024 approaches. Phillips has been a regular for England despite playing little for City, and he was included in the Three Lions squad for their previous two major championships.
