Under Pressure: Roy Hodgson: Who Might Be Next?
In their derby match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, Crystal Palace was soundly defeated 4-1, casting doubt on Roy Hodgson’s future. With only 24 points from 23 games, the Eagles are now 14th in the Premier League.
With games remaining for Brentford, Nottingham Forest, and Luton Town, Hodgson’s team is now only four points above the relegation zone. There have been demonstrations against the club’s administration at recent games, despite their recent 14-game winning streak of just two in all competitions.
We will be ranking each of the managers who have been linked to a possible transfer to the London club today.
Graham Potter
The appointment of Graham Potter, a longstanding rival of Crystal Palace, may have surprised some. However, after a horrible stint at Chelsea, the 48-year-old might be making a comeback to the Premier League.
During his tenure on the South Coast, Potter performed wonders for Brighton, leading them to three consecutive record-breaking point totals before setting them up for their inaugural European campaign.
But at Chelsea, Potter’s wizardry didn’t appear to function quite the same. At the conclusion of his tenure at the team, he had only 12 victories in 31 games, enough for a 37% win percentage.
However, Palace, which has several young players like Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze, and Michael Olise, would be a good fit for Potter. Potter would undoubtedly like his prospects of improving the team’s current point total and getting them to play a much better style of football.
Steve Cooper
Since leaving Nottingham Forest in December 2023, Cooper has not been able to secure employment. After just one win in 13 games, he was fired from the team and Nuno Espirito Santo took his place.
Nevertheless, Cooper performed admirably for the most part of his tenure at Forest, and the supporters continued to support him until the day he departed. When Cooper joined Forest in September 2021, the team was at the bottom of the EFL Championship standings. After just eight months, he had guided the team to promotion to the Premier League after defeating Huddersfield in the Play-Off final.
Should Steve Parish give Hodgson the boot, Cooper is still the bookies’ favorite to win the position.
Jose Mourinho
Although this seems utterly implausible at first glance, it might not be as absurd as some people believe. After leaving AS Roma, Mourinho has expressed his wish to rejoin the Premier League, with Manchester United being his preferred destination.
But Erik Ten Hag continues to appear to have the support of the United boardroom, therefore Mourinho may be considering a transfer to another Premier League team.
When Mourinho was the Inter Milan manager back in 2007, he stated, “London is perfect.” Here, my family resides in happiness. If it’s not functioning at Chelsea, try Crystal Palace or another location.
“They [Palace fans] are noisy, they support their team, and they put pressure on opponents and the referee,” Mourinho said in a more recent interview in 2014. However, that’s pleasant, therefore I’m glad to visit Crystal Palace.
The Premier League as a whole would benefit financially from a possible comeback, and Mourinho and the Palace supporters would form a fantastic alliance.
