A significant update on David Moyes’s future at West Ham has been given by Fabrizio Romano.
Moyes’s current deal at West Ham
After winning the Europa Conference League the previous season, Moyes has led the Hammers through the Europa League group stage, putting them in yet another excellent position. Though the Scot has been playing well, there has been talk of him leaving the London Stadium in the summer. West Ham is also in the running for a top-six finish in the Premier League.
The 60-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and as 2023 came to a finish, journalist Toby Cudworth expressed concern that Moyes’ time at the London Stadium may be coming to an end.
According to what we gather, West Ham has been considering potential successors for him. Despite having one year remaining on his contract after winning the Conference League in June, there has been no discussion about signing a new deal. One thing is almost certain: unless something miraculous happens, David Moyes will not be signing a contract extension at West Ham.
“Moyes has told friends he does not expect to be manager of West Ham next season,” Football Insider continued, “and he has had no signals from club chiefs they want him long-term.”
But now that Romano is revealing what he’s heard from east London, things appear to have taken a new turn.
Romano provides an update on Moyes’s situation at West Ham.
Reliable reporter Romano stated that “concrete discussions” are going place and “are advancing well” in relation to Moyes signing a new deal with West Ham in his daily briefing column for Caught Offside. The manager and the Hammers are “happy,” and Romano anticipates “movement” in the upcoming weeks.
“Serious talks to extend David Moyes’s contract at West Ham are currently underway.” Moyes wishes to stay, the talks are going well, and I’ve been informed that final details will be finalized in the coming weeks. West Ham is pleased with his output.
After a disastrous first season in command of West Ham in 2017–18, Moyes has more than made up for it with his second stay, which has brought European football and trophy to the London Stadium.
Earlier in the season, analyst Martin Keown and writer Alex Crook praised him, with the two noting in October:
“For David Moyes, it’s moving along wonderfully right now, isn’t it? Maintaining that level of success in Europe has been a tremendous accomplishment for them. striking the correct balance. Despite dropping to seventh place, they are still in the mix and appear capable of improving.
“We are discussing a new contract for a player here [Bowen], but what about a new contract for the manager?” Crook continued. It is a unique situation in which David Moyes wins a European trophy and decides not to sign a new contract. These discussions must be occurring, right?
“You trust the ownership,” Keown continued, “but I think David Moyes deserves credit because, as you know, he’s nearing the end of his career, but I think he’s getting better every year.” In fact, he’s getting better. They’re doing amazing work in Europe, and he appears to be enjoying the fight at the moment.
With a new contract for Moyes, Crook might just get his wish, and it appears that this month will be interesting to watch.
