At The Peninsula Stadium, Phil Parkinson blasted his team’s “ridiculous” defense as Wrexham lost 3-1 to Salford City.
The Ammies caused havoc in the first sixteen minutes of play when they scored twice from corners. Elliot Webb made it 2-0 with a straight kick from a flag-kick.
Just before halftime, Sam Dalby scored his first league goal of the year to cut the lead. However, Salford scored again early in the second half, and Wrexham, who have now lost their previous three games across all categories, were unable to recover.
Parkinson remarked, “We gave away two goals from corners, which is ridiculous.”
“We put ourselves up against a team that is winning a lot of games.
“It is really difficult to let up two goals like that because they are a strong, set-play club that can get the ball to Matt Smith and make it a real tussle.
“We got one back but the third goal, we weren’t strong enough in our box again so it was very disappointing.”
Parkinson acknowledges that Wrexham, who are currently in fourth place in the standings but are only six points behind leaders Stockport County with a game remaining, were second best against Salford, who are ranked 19th, in every aspect.
“We gave Salford a tremendous boost, but if we had properly defended those two set-plays, we would have started to get a foothold in the game.”
“We worked on it knowing what kind of game it would be, but you can’t legislate for two corners to be made the way they were.
“We got back in the game with a good goal from Sam but the third goal was a real blow for us because the conditions were in our favour second half and you fancied us with that goal to get back in the game.”
After losing a third goal, Wrexham produced virtually little and never seemed to be in the game.
