In response to critiques of his play at Rangers under Philippe Clement, Todd Cantwell has noted that this season he is playing differently from the previous one.
After joining in January of last year, the former Norwich City forward was probably the team’s star under Michael Beale, but he struggled to reach the same heights this season.
Cantwell acknowledges that there is “always a lot of noise” surrounding him and that he “invites” it, but he still feels that he is carrying out Philippe Clement’s request and that the benefits are beginning to materialize.
“There is always a lot of noise about me and I know I am the type of player who invites that,” Cantwell stated, as reported by The Herald on February 5. However, that is okay as long as they are all observing the positive aspects as well.
“I’m currently playing centrally as a No. 10, and I’m distributing the numbers that I believe I can.” The management is aware of my ideal position. “When I first came in we had a few injuries we had a few complications in a sense,” he said to me.
“Listen, I believe I am playing at my best position right now because it is a position I enjoy playing in. I appreciate the manager providing
“Listen, it’s evident that I’m playing as a different No. 10 than I did previously. The way we are playing is different in terms of style and technique. I’m not being asked to play like I was the previous season, as you can see.
“A lot of comments are visible. Todd is staying out of it. This is not Todd’s doing. However, I’m being asked to play in a different way, and it’s effective. Let’s just have fun as the numbers are flowing in and I’m having a good time.
Cantwell adjusts at the Rangers when Clement replaces Beale
After a lackluster start to the season and even a possible departure from the Rangers, it appeared as though Cantwell may be a one-time fad.
After taking a dive against Aberdeen at the end of November, he was widely criticized. However, the very following game, Clement startled critics by substituting him in the first half of a lackluster European draw at home against Aris Limassol, raising speculations that the new manager might not have time for him.
The relationship between the two was allegedly at its worst at the time, but that doesn’t sound like the case anymore, and the Belgian’s strategy appears to be working as he has scored four SPFL goals in his last six games.
The Englishman, a frequent target of fellow former Norwich player Chris Sutton, has also drawn criticism from former Rangers players for the volume of attention he garners on social media.
It won’t be a big deal, though, as long as he is contributing to a Clement team that seems to be playing fairly well right now despite injury issues.
He seems to have defended his viewpoint and doesn’t seem to be planning to change, although there are some people who find something about his demeanor offensive.
Based on the information available, that seems reasonable enough, but if this team is to succeed in their growing title threat, he will need to continue his strong performances.
Regarding further Rangers news, Clement has verified that an additional player may require surgery due to an injury.
