In the competition for promotion to the Premier League, Leeds United may have faced increased pressure, but they responded at Plymouth Argyle with all the qualities of a winning team. Following their triumph in Plymouth, Leeds manager Daniel Farke was most pleased with their approach, thinking, and capability.
After Southampton’s victory at West Bromwich Albion the previous evening, Leeds had to continue their amazing winning streak. They responded appropriately, winning 2-0 at Home Park to begin 2024 with eight straight wins and just one goal given up.
Despite a far from historic performance on the road, the Whites managed to overcome a resolute opponent and earn three points thanks to goals from Georginio Rutter and Wilfried Gnonto in the first and second halves, respectively. Leeds is currently two points ahead of Southampton in second place. Southampton’s next matchup is against Hull City at the St Mary’s Stadium next week.
Farke was pleased with his team’s performance because his team faces more pressure every week and must continue to win in order to avoid losing any points. He described the performance as “extremely mature.” Today, I’m a happy man. Since October, no other team has left this place with three points. Our maturity today really pleased me. Plymouth is a formidable and challenging home team. There will always be times when you need to demonstrate your compactness and dig in. We had to focus on the ball for twenty to twenty-five minutes in the second half. We remained attentive and focused.
“Excellent goal at 2-0. Probably easier to score than we did. Though the win and clean sheet make me very delighted, it could have been more comfortable. It was a mature and well-balanced performance.”
