Jerry Jones, the owner, president, and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, declared earlier in the summer that his team would be going “all in” for the 2024 NFL season. Jones talked about free agency and not letting it slide as the Cowboys usually do—not to mention that they have their own free agents.
Dallas made two of their best off-season trades, acquiring two fifth-round picks and a sixth-round pick in return for Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore. Marcus Spears, an ESPN commentator and former defensive tackle for the Cowboys, was asked about his former team and whether they could contend with their current squad. Spears spent eight years as a player for Dallas, from 2005 to 2012.
Spears stated, “Dallas sits pat every free agency.” Additionally, they market these manoeuvres. I didn’t believe Brandin Cooks would elevate them to a Super Bowl-caliber performance. Terrell Owens, a wide receiver who will go down in history, was one of the free agents they signed. Dallas finished 9-7 in 2005 and 2006 before winning 13-3 in 2007 and securing a first-round bye in the postseason. That year, of course, was the one in which New York shocked the unbeaten New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, as they lost to the Giants in the divisional round.
“You guys are in when you go get Terrell Owens,” Spears remarked. “However, considering that free agency era when we were genuinely attempting to win a Super Bowl, that was the last time.”
