Wrexham was declared the obvious favourite to advance from League Two before a game had even been played, but how many points are needed to advance?
With 111 points, Phil Parkinson’s team broke all previous records to win the National League.
Since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the team, Reds fans have grown accustomed to winning, and this season is no exception.
The Reds have played 33 games in the League Two season and are now in fourth place with 59 points, four points behind first place, and a game in hand over second and third.
There are still 13 games left in the season for Phil Parkinson’s team: 7 at the SToK Cae Ras and 6 away.
We’ve looked at what it often takes to get promoted from League Two in the hopes that the Reds will be promoted twice in a row.
With the exception of the vacant 2019–20 season, a league two championship would be won with an average of 88 points for the previous ten years.
Northampton’s 2015–16 season, when they won the league with 99 points and 29 victories from 46 games, was the greatest point total during that time.
It has been possible to win the league with 91 points (Leyton Orient, 2023), 84 points (Forest Green Rovers, 2022), and 82 points (Cheltenham, 2021).
The pressure to win the league isn’t as great as it was in the National League, since there are three automatic promotion spots available.
In the previous ten years, a team needed an average of 82 points to secure one of the three promotion slots; the teams who were promoted won 23 out of 46 games.
The three teams with the greatest third-place point totals were Bury (2014/15), Bristol Rovers (2015/16), and Doncaster (2016/17). Of the 46 games played, those teams won 26 of them.
Northampton finished third with 83 points last season, while Stevenage moved up to second position with 85 points.
Despite their lacklustre play-off performance, Wrexham can still advance by using this route.
In League Two, unlike the National League, finishing fourth to seventh secures a spot in the play-offs, which consist of the customary home and away legs preceding the Wembley final.
With an average of 72 points, you would have placed seventh in the previous ten years and earned a spot in the lottery known as the play-offs.
Mansfield scored 77 points in 2021/22, which was the greatest point total for seventh place in recent memory. Salford City finished sixth with 75 points in the previous campaign.
Wrexham would need to win the league title with 29 points from their remaining 13 games, according to past season averages.
While 13 points would normally earn a spot in the play-offs, 23 points would typically guarantee immediate promotion.
With the Reds still needing to face all three of the top teams, the race for promotion is fiercely contested. Where do you think they’ll end up at the end of April?
