Archie Grey, a standout for Leeds United, caught the attention of OGC Nice during the transfer window, but a deal never happened, according to The Telegraph.

The tabloid claimed on its website on February 28 that the 17-year-old Elland Road phenomenon was the focus of interest for the Ligue 1 club, but that the club could not afford him.

Rather, Grey agreed to a new deal at Elland Road that will keep him a Leeds player through June 2028. In 2025, his prior contract was supposed to expire. [BBC Sports]

Leeds United secure Archie Gray’s future at Elland Road

Under David Farke, the 17-year-old has been a tremendous asset and shown his versatility by switching from his natural midfield position to right-back due to combat injuries.

But now that the injured players are back, Grey has continued to play defence and has looked excellent this season.

Even better, on Friday, February 23, he scored his first senior goal for the team, beating Leicester City and cutting the lead between them and the Championship leaders.

Grey has only made 38 appearances, but he already ranks among the first names on the roster after starting 30 of Leeds’ 34 league games to date. Leeds supporters will be thanking their fortunate stars that Nice could not afford the young player.

A young player with Gray’s potential and talent doesn’t come along very often, so Leeds should cherish this one. There will undoubtedly be a lot of interest in the summer, especially if the team isn’t able to advance to the Premier League.

Grey may wish to start playing more centrally, but with players like Ilia Gruev, Glen Kamara, and Ethan Ampadu already in the lineup, it may take some time before he regularly moves out of the right-back position.
