If Wrexham doesn’t get promoted, does manager Phil Parkinson still have a job? Carlton Palmer made his assessment known.
Carlton Palmer, a pundit and former England player, maintains that despite Wrexham’s recent performance, they will automatically advance.
As they aim to play football in the third division for the first time since 2005, Wrexham is presently in fourth place in League Two.
Despite winning four of their ten league games this year, the Red Dragons’ 2024 has not performed up to par thus far. After winning the National League pennant the previous season, Phil Parkinson’s team was among the strong favourites to be promoted to League One.
Carlton Palmer believes Phil Parkinson will still get Wrexham promoted
He revealed to FLW exclusively that Wrexham had drawn, lost, and drawn their last three games. They are faltering, with only two victories in their last six games. Although they are now three points behind Stockport County and just one point below Crewe Alexandra, they have just dropped out of the automatic spots.
“Yes, I believe Phil Parkinson’s role is to help them advance. He has the equipment necessary to do the task. When you are the manager, that is one thing. Having success is one thing, but being able to maintain it because you have the means to do so is quite another. He’s got the tools he needs to accomplish the job, and I fully anticipate Wrexham getting promoted straight away.
“Yeah, there may be bad runs during the season when you lose a few games, but Crewe Alexandra is doing really well right now. They have won three of their previous six games and drawn two. Stockport has also experienced a brief lull, with two losses and two draws.
“However, I fully anticipate Wrexham to finish in the automatic promotion spots at the end of the season. If they don’t, I’m sure some questions regarding Parkinson will be raised, and it’s possible that he’s looking for work.”
Wrexham have dropped off – but it’s not over yet for Parkinson
Despite their recent poor performance, Wrexham should still be considered for automatic promotion.
The Red Dragons are still only three points behind Mansfield Town, the league leaders, despite their recent decline.
Even yet, they trail Crewe Alexandra in third place by just one point and Stockport County in second place by just three points.
Wrexham still has the opportunity to move up automatically, but they will also be warily eyeing MK Dons, who are only two points behind them and three points outside of the automatic promotion spots.
Given that Wrexham still needs to face all three of the top three teams—Crewe and Stockport being their final two games of the season—Phil Parkinson should believe that his team is well-positioned to win the league.
However, the race for the League Two championship and promotion is still very much alive and could go right down to the wire.
Parkinson can lose his job if he doesn’t meet the goals since he will be under pressure to get them promoted.
