Elliot Lee, a midfielder for Wrexham, emphasised how unique the club’s National League promotion was, stating that the supporters’ feelings “go deeper than football.”
Elliot Lee, a star for Wrexham, gave recognition to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds for the club’s historic promotion the previous season.
With a 3-1 victory over Boreham Wood in April 2023, the 29-year-old helped the Red Dragons return to the Football League for the first time in 15 years with 15 goals in 51 games during the 2022–2023 season.
The nation was captivated by the massive 111-point season after an exciting championship race between Notts County, the National League’s runner-up.
The Hollywood owners led the joyful scenes as Lee talked eloquently about the club’s supporters and revealed the feelings the promotion had brought to light inside of him. The former West Ham player stated, “I get goosebumps because we knew how much it meant to people,” in an interview with the Men In Blazers podcast.
“Yes, everyone knows how amazing Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are, but they have gone above and above for the community, something that the gaffer [Phil Parkinson] and Rob and Ryan have instilled in us as well.
“These folks have been here before and have experienced a great deal of hardship with the club, yet they continue to show up in large numbers. We got to accomplish that for folks. I saw sincere tears of joy and delight during the bus procession.
“I am quite proud of that, so I will carry that emotion with me into eternity. People’s lives are at stake; it’s more than just football. When I step onto the pitch, I never take for granted the fact that this club represents people’s lives.”
With 14 goals in League Two, Lee has continued to lead the team in scoring this season. Wrexham is currently in fourth place in the standings, only one point out of automatic promotion.
