Since the start of the previous season, Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup’s status has been uncertain; with his successful 2023 campaign, this uncertainty has only grown. Gallup’s standing in head coach Mike McCarthy’s offence has declined as a result of his career-lows in yards (418), touchdowns (two), and yards per game (26.4). He also has the second-lowest amount of receptions in his career (34). Gallup’s future appears uncertain given his salary charge of $13.8 million for the upcoming season, as reported by spotrac.com. This is especially true given that Tolbert’s snap total increased this season while Gallup’s decreased, and it is reasonable to argue that Tolbert should receive more offensive snaps in the future.
At the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday, team owner Jerry Jones politely avoided discussing the situation with Gallup, who was allegedly the focus of a meeting with his agent on Thursday. Jones stated, “We don’t have a decision that we would like to talk about right now.” This is one that we will discuss with him. Without him, there would be nothing we would say. “Gallup has never quite come back from the ACL injury he suffered near the end of the 2021 season,” according to ESPN. “Among the Cowboys’ primary receivers last season, he was unquestionably ranked third. Out of 81 qualifying receivers, he came in at number 59 in receiving DYAR. In contrast, after making significant progress in the second half of the season, CeeDee Lamb finished third while Brandin Cooks came in at number 28.The Cowboys would have a tonne of dead money on their cap if Gallup received a standard cut. However, the Cowboys would have $9.5 million in more cap space plus $4.4 million in dead money if they made the cut after June 1. Now, considering Gallup’s recent performance, the Cowboys’ decision to cut him would hardly be considered “bold”; rather, it may be perceived as a necessary move given the consequences for his cap. Furthermore, Gallup has only had two or fewer receptions in a game 11 times (he had zero catches twice). While some argue that Gallup’s ACL injury is a big factor in his consistent reduction in output, the NFL is a results-driven organisation, and Gallup isn’t delivering.
Gallup seems to be a victim of his cap hit and bad form, with the Cowboys facing a pivotal offseason as the team makes numerous important decisions on player contracts.
