It has been suggested that Nottingham Forest’s lack of aggression in front of goal should worry Evangelos Marinakis and Nuno Espirito Santo more than Liverpool’s contentious winner.
Darwin Nunez’s stoppage-time goal against Jurgen Klopp’s team at the City Ground in the Premier League gave Forest hope for a crucial point. Nunez scored the winning goal for Liverpool in the ninth minute of extra time, but Forest was incensed because referee Paul Tierney had stopped play prior to the goal due to what appeared to be a head injury to Ibrahima Konate.
At the boundary of the Liverpool penalty area, with Forest in the lead, Tierney blew. However, Konate soon recovered, and then the referee strangely gave the ball to the visiting custodian Caoimhin Kelleher rather than a home player, who subsequently initiated the play that resulted in the thrilling victory.
However, former player Garth Crooks did not include the controversial referee that Forest claim cost them the game in his Premier League Team of the Week selections for the BBC. Instead, he said, “The fact that Forest were incapable of putting the ball into the back of the Liverpool net having created so many chances should be of far greater concern to manager Nuno Espirito Santo and the club’s owner Evangelos Marinakis.”
