The Tractor Boys overcame a two-go deficit twice in the end to defeat the Robins in the closing minutes and keep their spot in the automatic promotion spots.

Kieran McKenna’s team sealed all three points with an 89th-minute goal from Leif Davis, his first league goal of the year.

This year, Ipswich is attempting to make history by becoming the first team from League One to the Premier League twice in a row.

But, Southampton and Leeds United will compete with them for the top two spots.

Kieffer Moore message

Following the thrilling victory midweek, Moore wrote a statement to the team’s supporters highlighting Davis’ contribution.

The Wales international got the game started against City, but Ali Al-Hamadi, who replaced him, instantly ignited the comeback with a goal in the 62nd minute.

Moore described Davis as a “special team man” on Instagram.

What a turnout.

Having started 33 of McKenna’s 36 games in the Championship, Davis has been one of the most crucial members of the team this season (all stats via Fbref).

On Tuesday night, the left-back transformed from a goal assister to a goal scorer, netting his first league goal of the year.

His 14 assists, which lead all second division players, have been crucial to Ipswich’s promotion attempt.

His future at Portman Road has been under scrutiny, with reports indicating that West Ham and Newcastle United are both interested in making a summer transfer for the 24-year-old.

But if this goal helps the squad cross the finish line in the race for automatic promotion, it might be necessary for Davis to stay with the Suffolk team.

Davis’s contract is valid through the summer of 2025 as well.

Davis’s late goal kept Ipswich inside the top two, with Leeds in third place still two points behind.

In order to keep up the pressure on Ipswich, the Whites defeated Stoke City 1-0 at home on Tuesday night.

Russell Martin’s team still has a game in hand, but Southampton is eight points behind in fourth place.

With just three points separating them from Ipswich at the top of the table, Leicester City may be able to win the title at Portman Road this year.

McKenna’s team will travel to Cardiff City on March 9th to play them.

Davis’ importance to Ipswich couldn’t be clearer

Davis popping up with the crucial moment on Tuesday night was a worthy moment for the full-back.

He has been a standout player for the team this season, and now he has a memorable moment that fans will look back on fondly regardless of what happens in the promotion battle.

If Ipswich do get over the line in a top two spot then it will become an even bigger goal in the club’s folklore.

Additionally, as Davis would undoubtedly want to stay at Portman Road after being promoted, this goal may help ensure his future with the team.
