With a twist, Ally McCoist has announced his all-time Rangers XI.

Looking ahead to tonight’s encounter in Lisbon, as Philippe Clement’s team plays Benfica in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 match, is the record Ibrox goalscorer. In their last group match, Gers unexpectedly defeated Real Betis of Spain to secure first place with their first-ever away victory against Spanish competition. Their prize was a meeting with the heavily pressed Portuguese team.

Following a Premiership setback against Motherwell over the weekend, attention is momentarily diverted from the race for the title to European activity, with McCoist slated to provide commentary. However, he made a break to announce his ideal Light Blues lineup for TNT. It includes a number of his colleagues from the 1980s and 1990s, who made history by winning nine straight titles. The run began under Graeme Souness before Walter Smith took over in Govan and really ramped it up.

Additionally, McCoist told a wonderful story about how the team honoured the late Davie Cooper, a left wing magician, at his testimonial. “I have a fantastic story about Coop,” he stated. He had a wand with his left foot, an absolute wand. And, may God bless him, every boy had to buy him a gift at his testimonial dinner.

“And with practically everything, what could we get the man? And I realised, “I know, the one thing Davie Cooper lacks,” so we gave him a right leg at the banquet!

“We obtained one of the model dummies from one of the town’s shops, removed its right leg, and wrapped everything up. It was a huge hit when we served it to Coop at his testimonial dinner.”
