Due to Gonzalo Montiel’s injury concerns, Sevilla may not be able to pay Nottingham Forest the €11 million transfer price that would have otherwise been required.
Estadio Deportivo claims that because the defender is sidelined by ailments, Nottingham Forest may be able to avoid having to purchase him.
According to the newspaper, Nottingham Forest is obligated to pay €11 million for Montiel upon fulfilling certain terms associated with his existing loan agreement.
One of goals was to play in a specific amount of games, ideally half of Nottingham Forest’s total during the season, but he is finding it more and more difficult to reach that threshold.
This season, the Argentine has missed numerous games due to injuries, and now he is out once more citing “discomfort.”
Although Nottingham Forest has not officially disclosed the length of time they anticipate him out, Sevilla is facing a “race against the clock.”
When they approved the clause, they thought it would be possible, but as of right now, Montiel has only participated in 14 games—he has missed 17,—and will now need to play in 72% of Forest’s remaining games in the Premier League, which is their only current competition.
That implies that in order for the clause to be activated, he needs to play in eight of the team’s 11 remaining league games.
That’s terrible news for Sevilla, who will need to drastically reduce costs this summer in order to balance their budget, and who would have gladly accepted €11 million for a player they don’t want.
Although Montiel might be able to play enough to trigger the clause, it doesn’t appear realistic right now, and his most recent injury may be considered “untimely” given the Spanish team’s financial aspirations.
