Leeds United has been eroding Leicester City bit by bit throughout 2024, akin to hacking down a massive oak tree. The Whites’ dominant play and performance have made many people’s expectations—that the Foxes would win the Championship league title race—laugh.

Right now, the only thing you can say with certainty about Leicester is that they will need to score a tonne of points in the remaining stages to stave off Leeds’ momentum and even Ipswich Town’s onslaught.

After Leeds’ 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, the advantage is at just two points. However, there is a very intriguing possibility: if Leicester loses at Hull City this afternoon, Leeds will not only take the lead in their next game but will also remain there for at least two weeks.

Before they go to Bristol City on March 29, Leicester City’s match at the MKM Stadium this afternoon will be their final taste of Championship action. Leeds might have a fantastic month if they can get a jump on their promotion and championship opponents. The Foxes won’t play until Good Friday due to the double whammy of still being in the FA Cup and then an international break.

Leeds have nine days until their next match, so they can take it easy and observe how the division is contested this weekend. They will also have plenty of time to prepare for their home match against Millwall. If the Foxes lose at Hull, Daniel Farke’s team might take the lead if they defeat Millwall at Elland Road since they have a higher goals differential than Leicester.

Naturally, everything will depend on how Ipswich Town performs, but whether they finish first or not, the opportunity to sit above Leicester for two weeks over the international break would send a stronger message to the Foxes and bolster the optimism and confidence that are currently circulating throughout Leeds.

There’s bound to be more surprises in store for the Championship run-in, but there’s also a genuine chance for yet another huge statement outcome.
