Adrian Clarke, a former star of the EFL, believes that Ipswich Town ought to have added a defender with promotion fighting experience from the Championship during the January transfer window.
Ipswich has made a name for itself this season as a potential candidate for automatic promotion to the Premier League. The Tractor Boys’ dreams of earning automatic promotion, however, were dashed when they lost 2-1 to Cardiff City over the weekend, giving up both goals in stoppage time.
In order to help their chances of promotion, Clarke emphasised that Ipswich ought to have added a player to their defence who has experience playing at the top end of the division.
With the amount of goals Ipswich has given up, the former EFL star said that he is shocked that the team is still in the running for the top two.
In his opinion, the Ipswich defence need maintain more clean sheets in order to avoid depending solely on their forwards to outscore opponents in every game.
Clarke stated on the What The EFL podcast, “Look, I have been saying it all season about Ipswich Town’s centre-backs; I think they should have upgraded in January.”
Ipswich are now in third place and they are one point off Leeds United, sitting in second place.
