Ian Poveda’s contract with Leeds United is set to expire after this season, thus the club will allow him to leave permanently in the summer.

This season, Daniel Farke has had to make a lot of difficult roster decisions because he has far more depth than most Championship managers.

In order to give some players the opportunity to go out and acquire the playing time that wasn’t available at Elland Road, January exits were approved.

One of the last players to leave Leeds during the January transfer window was Poveda, who traveled the short distance to Hillsborough to take a loan with Sheffield Wednesday.

After joining them with the expectation of immediately making a run back to League One, Poveda’s arrival has spurred a dramatic comeback in Danny Rohl’s form, bringing them level on points with safety.

The Colombian international has played for the Owls for the same amount of league games as he did for Leeds this season—seven. He has already contributed one assist and is looking extremely dynamic on the right wing.

He was forced to watch on from the stands as Leeds travelled to S6 last Friday and came away with three points to keep up the promotion charge.

Poveda, who signed a four-and-a-half year contract in January 2020 after joining from Manchester City, is nearing the end of his Leeds contract, and it doesn’t appear like he will be signing a new one.

Football Insider claims that Leeds is willing to let the player go when his contract expires at the end of this season.

Wednesday may want to sign the player long-term in the summer, but it may depend on their chances of surviving, as championship football is probably still up for grabs following their strong half-season run.

Many supporters rightfully expected to see Poveda in the starting lineup for this season after he scorched Nottingham Forest in the preseason after coming off the bench.

He’s doing well at Hillsborough right now, but we haven’t seen nearly enough of him for it to be a wise squad choice.

After spending time on loan from Leeds, it makes sense for him to leave permanently and sign a long-term contract with a team that genuinely wants him to stay.
