Newcastle United contracts: Here are the latest contract situations regarding Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Jamaal Lascelles and co.

At St. James’ Park, Newcastle United is trying to sign a few players to long-term contracts.

Securing a new, long-term contract for the Brazilian midfielder is the Magpies’ first objective. The current contract Joelinton signed when arriving from Hoffenheim in 2019 is scheduled to expire in the summer.

Joelinton could have to be sold by Newcastle this summer if they can’t come to an agreement, or else he’ll be available for free the next season.

It is understood that negotiations are heading in a positive direction with Joelinton keen on extending his stay at St James’ Park. The 27-year-old is after a new deal that would put him amongst the club’s highest earners.

“We’re still trying from the club’s side,” head coach Eddie Howe said on Joelinton’s contract situation. “We’re desperate to keep him, we know his qualities and what he brings but I don’t think there has been any major update or any major change to the situation.”

Joelinton is currently injured until the back end of the 2023-24 season but there is renewed hope of seeing the 27-year-old back in black and white. His rehabilitation from a thigh injury picked up in January is going to plan.

Elsewhere in the squad, Howe confirmed that an option to extend Jamaal Lascelles’ contract by another year has been triggered.

“I hope he’s here next year,” Howe stated in reference to Lascelles. He has performed admirably in his role as group captain and leader. His skill level has significantly increased, and he has contributed significantly to the season and performed admirably when he has played.

Naturally, with everyone in shape, there is fierce rivalry for spots in that region right now. In terms of his contract, it expires the next year.”

However, there are still a number of players whose contracts are about to expire this summer and who do not yet know if they will receive new contracts.

Deals with Loris Karius, Mark Gillespie, Paul Dummett, and Matt Ritchie expire in June. This summer, the contracts of Jeff Hendrick and Kell Watts, who are presently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic, respectively, will expire at Newcastle.

1. Loris Karius – 2024

Karius signed a new one-year deal at Newcastle in the summer but has made just one Premier League appearance since signing.

2. Mark Gillespie – 2024

Still waiting to make his Premier League debut for Newcastle, three-and-a-half-years after signing. The 31-year-old goalkeeper’s current deal expires at the end of the season after signing a one-year extension over the summer.

3. Kell Watts – 2024

Currently on loan at Wigan Athletic with his contract at Newcastle set to expire in the summer.

4. Jeff Hendrick – 2024

Hendrick is still contract to Newcastle until the end of the season but his time at the club is effectively over with the midfielder currently out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. He has been left out of the Wednesday squad for the second half of the season and may not play again this campaign.

5. Lewis Hall – 2024/(TBC)

Hall joined Newcastle on an initial loan deal from Chelsea which expires at the end of the season. The Magpies have an obligation to buy the teenager but the contract length is not yet known.

6. Paul Dummett – 2024

Signed a new one-year extension at Newcastle over the summer.

7. Matt Ritchie – 2024

Ritchie signed a three year contract extension in 2020 which included an option to extend for a further year. The club triggered that extension in the summer.

8. Jamaal Lascelles – 2025

The Newcastle skipper signed a six-year deal back in 2018 which was due to end in June but Eddie Howe has confirmed an extension has been triggered to keep him at the club for another year.

9. Emil Krafth – 2025

Krafth signed a one year extension at Newcastle last year before picking up a serious knee injury that ruled him out for the majority of the 2022-23 campaign. He has since returned to fitness and made a handful of appearances this season. A one-year extension has now been triggered.

10. Fabian Schar – 2025

The defender signed a two-year deal at Newcastle in 2022 which was set to expire at the end of the season but a new extension until 2025 has since been confirmed.

11. Jamal Lewis – 2025

Currently on loan at Watford, the left-back signed a five-year deal at Newcastle when he signed from Norwich City back in 2020.

12. Jay Turner-Cooke – 2025

Signed a two-year extension in 2023.
