Wrexham has made a strong push for promotion and has had a successful return to League Two.
The Hollywood owners of the team have given Phil Parkinson strong support in the transfer market, allowing him to assemble a roster full of household names. This summer, he plans to bring in more new players.
The Red Dragons are in a financial position where they haven’t had to sell any of their greatest players in recent years in terms of outgoings.
This is largely due to the substantial financial gains made possible by the popularity of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
Since their services are no longer needed, the majority of those who have left have either left on loan or been granted free exit.
But Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have discussed the necessity of running the team sustainably on multiple times, notably in the mission statement they released when they were appointed co-chairmen.
This would be particularly true if they were to advance to League One, when they could have to raise their revenue in order to contend for the top spot.
In light of this, we take a look at a few players that could be realistically moved in the summer for a profit.
Tom O’Connor
Tom O’Connor, who joined Wrexham during the January transfer window in 2022 for an undisclosed price from Burton, has made a major impression in his two years there.
It’s hardly surprising that he’s drawn interest from higher up the leagues given his versatility as a left-sided center-back or midfield player.
One of the teams that was previously said to be following the Irishman is Coventry City.
O’Connor, a player who is extremely versatile and at ease on the ball, would also not appear out of place in the Championship.
Parkinson wouldn’t want to let him go, but a large six-figure offer from a larger team might force the matter.
Max Cleworth
Max Cleworth, a young defender for Wrexham, has emerged as one of the team’s surprising stars.
The 21-year-old center back had inconsistent play in the National League and a sluggish start to his League Two career with few games.
But since the beginning of the year, he has truly turned the corner thanks to a run of extremely strong performances.
Cleworth embodies the modern defender; he never shirks his responsibilities at the back, even when it comes to passing and moving the ball forward.
After getting physically stronger throughout the off-season, he plays with maturity beyond his years, and he will undoubtedly have drawn some admiring looks from higher up.
Given that his contract expires in the summer of next year, it might be difficult to turn down a good offer.
Elliot Lee
Elliot Lee is among the club’s most vital players, along with Paul Mullin.
Having been persuaded to drop three tiers to join the Wrexham project, the gifted midfielder lit up the National League last season, netting 12 goals and dishing out eight assists.
He has already scored 15 goals in League Two this season and is a vital offensive threat.
Realistically speaking, Wrexham would not be pleased to see the 29-year-old go, but because of his Championship experience, teams like Birmingham City have reportedly expressed interest in signing him.
Lee recently signed a new deal to keep him at the Racecourse until the summer of 2027, so it would require a very big offer. Never say never though.
Ollie Palmer
Ollie Palmer, who was mostly ignored for the majority of this season, has been essential to Wrexham’s current form surge.
The former Wimbledon striker is still very much in the game and is still Paul Mullin’s finest offensive partner.
Palmer’s continued residence in the south of England and his frequent lengthy trip to perform in North Wales are well known.
This season, he has presented an unhappy image at times, but at 32, he may yet have one more transfer left in him before his career ends.
With one more year remaining on his contract, Palmer would be a valuable asset to any League Two team and would undoubtedly command a premium.
Jordan Davies
Jordan Davies, a homegrown talent, used to be the team’s brightest player for Wrexham.
In 2021/22, he had his greatest season as a member of the team, scoring 21 goals in all competitions while playing attacking midfield.
But all of that quickly changed with Elliot Lee’s arrival in the summer of 2022, and Davies has battled to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup.
Although it’s a reluctant sentiment, people are beginning to believe that the 25-year-old might be better off relocating to enhance his career.
Davies is not likely to want to relocate too far from home given that he has a small family and is preparing to open his own restaurant in Wrexham.
However, he would be well worth a try for a National League team vying for a promotion or a lower-table League Two team. He would also be charged for his signature, and his contract had one more year to run.
