Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham were unable to recover from an early goal by Tranmere Rovers as their League Two promotion hopes were dented by defeat
Wrexham’s chances of being promoted were severely damaged as they fell 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers at home.
The Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney co-own the Welsh team, which is currently ranked third in League Two. But with only eight games remaining, each one counts.
And they were unable to recover from Luke Norris’ early advantage, which the visitors were able to hold onto to the final siren, on Saturday, March 16 at the Racecourse Ground.
The RobRyanRed podcast called the outcome a “reality check,” but one of their fans questioned, “How many reality checks before we accept it’s just reality?”
Another stated: “The lack of a cohesive Plan B, when Plan A is failing on a semi-regular basis, is a big, big worry.” “Woeful again, final third is abysmal, crossing dreadful,” yelled a third person.
“Failing to score a goal while losing at home. Not wonderful,” wrote a fourth, while a fifth wrote, fearing they might already be over it. “Weekend destroyed,” they wrote. We’ve sealed it up.”
Wrexham is still in a strong position because the top three teams in the fourth tier receive automatic promotions. Although they still have a game in hand on fourth-place MK Dons, they are only in third on goal differential.
They still have two crucial games left in the struggle for first place: Mansfield, who defeated Bradford 5-1 while traveling, and Stockport County, who will play at home.
In February 2021, Reynolds and McElhenney finished taking over the team. Their financial contribution enabled them to win the National League championship and return to the Football League the previous season.
