The Premier League has to modify its financial regulations to create fair competition following Nottingham Forest’s points deduction decision.

According to financial analyst Kieran Maguire, who spoke with Football Insider exclusively, Forest’s entire squad cost just £12 million when they were promoted to the premier league.

After winning the play-offs, Forest was promoted in 2022, and they worked hard to bolster their roster throughout the summer transfer window.

After their promotion, club chairman Evangelos Marinakis approved the hiring of almost thirty new players, which significantly contributed to their violation of financial regulations.

On Monday, March 18, Forest lost four points because their permissible losses exceeded £34.5 million.

After Nottingham Forest’s squad cost was disclosed, Kieran Maguire demanded a significant regulation change.
If freshly promoted teams are supposed to compete against clubs whose squad expenses exceed £1 billion, Maguire thinks financial regulation reforms are necessary.

“It’s important to remember that Forest’s entire squad cost just £12 million as of June 30, 2022, when they were promoted to the Premier League,” Maguire said to Sean Fisher of Football Insider.

However, they will have to contend with teams like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City, whose rosters collectively cost over £1 billion.

“The current rules are simply not fit for purpose if people want more level playing fields.”
