Despite his summertime attempt to force a move away from Leeds United, the Italian has grown to be an important member of Daniel Farke’s team.
Although Wilfried Gnonto maintains Leeds United has treated him well in 2024, he does not buy into the story of his “redemption.”
Gnonto sought to force a move away from Elland Road during the summer, which put him in trouble with Leeds fans. The 20-year-old submitted a formal transfer request and withdrew from the team for games against Birmingham City and West Brom after becoming frustrated that multiple bids from Everton had been turned down.
Before allowing Gnonto to return to the team, manager Daniel Farke took a tough position on the matter. However, not everything was forgotten, and some fans persisted in airing their grievances. Gnonto finished 2023 as Dan James’ backup, but the Welshman’s injury created a window of opportunity, and after seven goals in 11 games, the attacker is back in the rotation.
According to Gnonto, 2024 is going incredibly well for him and the team, the Official Leeds United podcast has learned. “I wouldn’t say redemption since I am confident in my abilities, know what I am capable of, and am not arrogant in the slightest.
“I simply have faith in the work I do and in myself, even in the face of adversity. Football, you know, is hard. You may feel a little down mentally. I’ve always been fortunate to have my colleagues and family on my side. I’m currently incredibly thrilled because I’m assisting the team and demonstrating my abilities.
Although Gnonto was Leeds’ bright spot the previous season, the season at Elland Road became sour, and he was unable to save the squad from Premier League relegation on his alone. The team had four different managers before the season began, and several of their big-name acquisitions performed poorly before being forced to leave.
As disorganized as the West Yorkshire summer of last year was, the mass departure gave 49ers Enterprises and Farke a chance to infuse new life into the team. The team has been revitalized by the arrival of Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and Archie Gray, and Gnonto thinks that the players’ camaraderie has been a major factor in their success.
The Italian continued, “I’ve experienced a lot in football, but this season, the difference has been that everyone is enjoying themselves.” We are glad to see each other every day when we visit. On the pitch, we joke around and enjoy ourselves while working hard.
This year has been different from last year in that regard. It’s not a question of quality because numerous foreign athletes who had competed and won in Italy played in Spain the previous year. However, perhaps this season is different in that we’re having a little more fun, and it shows on the field.
