Misfit Rangers Sam Lammers has given yet another strong indication that he would like to make his summer loan move to FC Utrecht permanent.
The Dutchman, a costly £3.5 million summertime error made by former manager Michael Beale, arrived from Italian team Atalanta and has struggled to live up to his high price tag at Ibrox. Before Philippe Clement sent him out on loan to an Eredivisie club, he scored only two goals.
Since returning to his native country in January, Lammers has scored three goals in ten starts for Utrecht, solidifying his place in the starting lineup. Prior to this short-term agreement, he had stated that he would be eager to continue his career in the Netherlands.
Because the contract does not contain an option to buy, Utrecht would have to match Rangers’ asking price for the player in order to reach an agreement. The 26-year-old has been vague about his future plans, but he has now said he feels a connection to the Utrecht supporters and would be willing to quit Rangers if the opportunity arose.
While making an appearance on Dutch TV’s football program Cafe Galgenwaard, Lammers was questioned about his potential future but was unable to provide a firm response. “If you ask about my future, I won’t be able to answer it,” he replied.
But it’s obvious to me that I like being here. Yes, I am in the proper place. It is important to me to have the supporters. It truly pleases me to see such gratitude.”
It comes after Lammers acknowledged that he is getting dependent on scoring goals in front of the Utrecht fans, impressing spectators from a distance with the effect he is having on Ron Jans’ team. “Scoring for the Bunnikside is addictive,” he said. I now take our current winning streak for granted.
