It might take Sunderland till 2025 to produce a “outstanding” player.

Since being promoted to the Championship, Sunderland has suffered from a number of long-term injuries. Corry Evans, Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin, Niall Huggins, and Elliot Embleton have all missed substantial portions of the previous two seasons due to injury.

Due to injuries sustained during the previous season, they might not have made it to the play-off final, as they were forced to play Patrick Roberts at full back for two legs against Luton Town.

Although not much has changed this time around either, the current international break may have marked a turning point for the Black Cats, since Corry Evans is now an important player who may make a comeback.

In the upcoming weeks, a number of significant stars may make a comeback to the matchday roster, but one player’s recovery has only just began.

Prior to the QPR draw, it was announced that Jenson Seelt had sustained a knee injury and would likely be out for some time. However, writer Phil Smith had stated that if surgery was not required, Seelt might be able to play in the preseason.

Sunderland sustains a severe loss.
However, the Dutchman has subsequently undergone more testing, and Mike Dodds stated in today’s news conference that surgery will be necessary for his injuries.

“Jenson Seelt requires surgery on his knee injury – which means he is looking at 6-9 months on the sidelines,” Phil Smith wrote on X.

This implies that Seelt might make a comeback as late as December or January, or at the very least, early October.

Seelt hasn’t played well lately, much like the rest of the club, but altogether since coming from PSV, he has looked great.

Early on at the Stadium of Light, the defender had received praise for being “outstanding,” and at times, he had appeared to be among our finest defenders.

What does this portend for the future of Jenson Seelt?
Seelt might have had a chance to push himself into the starting lineup on a regular basis the next season given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Luke O’Nien’s role on the squad, but this is a major setback for both him and the team.

Young athletes can be seriously impacted by extended periods of time off the field, both psychologically and physically, and we’ve lately seen players like Alese and Cirkin sustain additional injuries thereafter.

Seelt has serious concerns about it and will be anxious about rejoining the squad when he eventually returns, but for the time being he needs to focus on getting better.
