Based on all the indications, it appears that one of the Rangers team’s most seasoned players is approaching his last few months at Ibrox.
There may still be a few bumps in the road, even though a summer departure appears certain given some reports that personal arrangements have already been agreed upon.
After all, a change in the regulations can necessitate a shift in strategy.
Even if Borna Barisic’s contract with the Rangers expires on July 1st, it is far from certain at this point that he will play for Trabzonspor come summertime, as the Turkish daily Sporx points out.
Borna Barisic’s Rangers exit up in the air
Sporx explain that discussions with Barisic have been ‘interrupted’. Trabzonspor are also planning to bring in up to two centre-halves, three midfielders, a winger and a forward during what is likely to be a very busy summer on the banks of the Black Sea.
The problem is, the amount of foreign players allowed in the squad of Super Lig sides will decrease to 12 from next season, meaning Trabzonspor may be forced to prioritise a couple of locally-based players rather than outside hires such as Rangers’ Croatia international.
Trabzonspor currently have 18 non-Turkish players, including those out of on loan. The likes of Mislav Orsic, formerly of Southampton, and one-time £72 million Arsenal signing Nicolas Pepe are contracted to Trabzonspor, alongside Thomas Meunier, Trezeguet and ex-Celtic loanee Filip Benkovic.
In contrast, Barisic may still play a significant role in the last few months of his Rangers career. In the Old Firm derby in April, Philippe Clement might even have to start the veteran because Ridvan Yilmaz’s status is considered questionable due to an injury he sustained while playing for Turkey internationally.
On Saturday afternoon, Rangers will play Hibernian at Easter Road.
It appears that Ridvan Yilmaz will be Barisic’s long-term substitute.
“It may be necessary for Borna Barisic to return to the starting lineup,” former Rangers player Barry Ferguson says to the Daily Record. And I don’t feel at all uncomfortable with that. Although his tenure at the club is drawing to a conclusion, his dedication to the cause remains unwavering.
“I’m sure he’ll want to leave Glasgow with another championship under his belt if these are going to be his final few months there.
“After so many years of service, there could not be a better way to say goodbye.”
Turkish reports indicate that Trabzonspor is also interested in John Lundstram, Barisic’s teammate on the Rangers.
