Oliver Glasner will serve as Crystal Palace’s head coach for the first time for the next season. He took over for the seasoned Roy Hodgson in February 2024, but he hasn’t had much time to fix the already troubled team.
The summer transfer window will be useful in this situation. Since moving to Selhurst Park, the former Eintracht Frankfurt manager has shown flashes of his brilliance; they will undoubtedly become more often following a summer transfer window managed by him.
With a few players on their roster who can be considered surplus to needs, it will provide Glasner and his recruitment team with the chance to enhance what might be defined as a directionless team. For the previous few years, Palace has been residing in the mid-table bracket; but, Glasner’s “modern approach” might definitely change that.
Five players have been highlighted by GIVEMESPORT as candidates for cut before the transfer window starts in July. This will free up cap space and financial resources for Glasner to pursue players who more closely align with his philosophy of football.
Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace appearances: 108
Marc Guehi’s tenure as Palace’s captain may come to an end this summer as one of their most marketable commodities. The former Chelsea prospect has been a consistent performer in the middle of the Selhurst Park defense, but his employers may want to take advantage of the current trend of young, skilled center backs being sought after.
Palace is expected to make a large profit from the 23-year-old, who has made 108 appearances for his current employers after originally costing £18 million. Admired by some of the best teams in the division, such as Manchester United, Guehi will be eager to play in the Champions League, something Palace are unable to provide.
Nathaniel Clyne
Crystal Palace appearances: 210
The money from the Londoners would be better used elsewhere, with Glasner hoping to invest in youth and create a club from scratch, considering that Nathaniel Clyne is reportedly paid £80,000 a week. In addition, the full-back’s ability to impact games is limited by his age of thirty-two, having graduated from the club’s academy in 2008.
The former England international has played in just 14 games this season, totaling just 1,046 minutes across all competitions. It is obvious that Daniel Munoz, who is very promising, is getting more playing time than him. Clyne has been forced to play out of position even when he has made an appearance for Palace this season, underscoring his lack of popularity at Selhurst Park.
Jairo Riedewald
Crystal Palace appearances: 91
For Jairo Riedewald, who hasn’t made an appearance under his new manager Glasner, the writing may be on the wall. The 27-year-old, who was acquired by the club for £8 million from Ajax in 2017, is expected to cost them money because he will only play 337 minutes of football in the 2023–2024 campaign.
Additionally, Riedewald earns a rather substantial £55,000 a week from the club, so clearing his debt would free up funds for any summer additions. Because of the Dutchman’s versatility, potential buyers may find him appealing, and because he isn’t expecting to play much more, Glanser and company will be happy to consider any offers.
Michael Olise
Crystal Palace appearances: 82
While there is undoubtedly value in Palace holding onto one of the Premier League’s top wingers in Michael Olise, there are also good reasons to think that splitting ways with the 22-year-old this summer—he has been beset by injuries in 2023–24—might be the wisest move for Palace and their boardroom executives.
The Frenchman’s worth is at its peak right now because he signed a new four-year contract in August 2023, and interested clubs will have to pay a hefty price to have him on their team. His £100,000 weekly salary, which leads the squad, is another major financial constraint on Palace’s expenditure, particularly considering that he has only played 755 minutes of football this season.
Jean-Philippe Mateta
Crystal Palace appearances: 96
Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future at Selhurst Park was unclear during the January transfer window, and he even considered leaving the Londoners, according to The Athletic. Palace may find themselves compelled to consider the French striker’s status this summer as they eagerly await the chance to play more consistent first team games.
With just 18 goals in 96 Palace appearances, Mateta has not exactly lit up the Premier League. However, there are plenty of other talented players that Palace may try to sign this summer, so it would be prudent for them to consider any bids made for the 26-year-old. The capital club may likely recover a large portion of the £9 million they paid for his services in 2022, even though he is not a consistent source of goals.
