After the Rangers failed to deploy Sam Lammers in his preferred role at Ibrox, he made hints about leaving the team.
In his 11 league games since joining Utrecht on loan, the Dutch attacker has four goals and three assists.
He has primarily played as a number nine for the Dutch side and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him.
Football Scotland [1 April] quoted him as saying: “I played more at No.10 at Rangers. I didn’t actually play a single match there as a striker. At Rangers, I suddenly ended up on the bench and then I didn’t even get on anymore. And then you are suddenly told that you can leave on loan.
“So by then you already know enough. Almost all my stuff is still in Scotland. I was in the Netherlands on holiday when the loan deal went through. I didn’t go back after that. But I don’t need more than some clothes and football boots. Moving back to the Netherlands was not in my plans, but it has been good fun. I can visit the family more easily.”
Since I’ve been here, we have only lost once. Even if the team and I were having success prior to my goals, as a striker you have a slight sense of relief when those goals are scored.
I really can’t comment with certainty on my future because no decisions have been made as of yet. My current objective is to get Utrecht to play football in Europe; after that, I’ll consider other options.
Sam Lammers ought to depart the Rangers come summertime.
With just two league goals and one assist in 17 appearances, Lammers’ time at Ibrox has been lackluster and has failed to live up to his £3 million price tag.
His struggles in Scotland to make an impression stand in stark contrast to his performances with Utrecht since he returned to the Eredivisie, where he has already scored four goals and provided three assists.
This shows that Lammers’ style of play is more suited for the Dutch league, which may also present him with more opportunity to succeed.
Lammers’s lack of success at Gers and his more encouraging displays in the Netherlands suggest that he is not a long-term fixture at the Scottish club.
It would be prudent for the Ibrox team to cash in on him during the summer transfer window so that Lammers can pursue a career where he can more fully realize his potential.
They will also be able to recover the money they originally spent on him, and they might even turn a profit they can use to their advantage.
In other Rangers news, there has been a personal update indicating that a prominent first-team player may be leaving Ibrox this summer.
