Max Wober, a center back for Leeds United, may not be joining Borussia Monchegladbach permanently.
According to a report from German publication Rheinische Post, which was cited by Sport Witness, the Bundesliga team may now be planning to look into other targets.
Naturally, Wober didn’t join Leeds until January of last year. But he was among several who left on loan during the January transfer window as the team was unable to prevent relegation from the Premier League.
The center back left for Germany, where he signed a season-long loan with Monchengladbach. Wober has made 24 appearances for his loan club in all competitions since making the move.
However, it appears that there may be less likelihood now that the summertime relocation will become permanent.
Monchengladbach suffered a financial setback
This most recent update indicates that Wober’s decision to sign a long-term contract with Gladbach in the summer instead of staying with Leeds is still up in the air.
It is said that the German team lost out on €3.4 million after not making it to the DFB-Pokal semifinals.
They are now reportedly reevaluating their possible transfer plans for this summer as a result.
Wober is one of the players being considered for that, along with whether or not signing him would be worthwhile given the situation.
It should be mentioned that Gladbach reportedly already thought that the center back’s apparent asking price of €14 million was too high.
Thus, it appears that the club is currently under the impression that, when the window opens, they could be able to secure a better choice for less money than the Leeds United loanee.
Wober’s loan team is now eight points clear of the relegation spots in the Bundesliga standings, sitting in 13th position. Leeds, on the other hand, are one point ahead of the play-off spots in the Championship rankings after finishing second.
As it stands, Wober’s deal with the Whites is still valid for more than three years. His future at Elland Road is thus assured through the conclusion of the 2026–2027 season.
An update for Leeds that might be annoying
One may argue that, in terms of Wober’s future, this is hardly the kind of update that people living near Elland Road would have preferred.
The center back’s move-seeking strategy from the previous summer, which he took after being demoted, did not seem to sit well with the supporters.
Therefore, if Monchengladbach does not turn his loan signing into a permanent one, he could not be completely welcomed back with open arms at the end of this season.
If that occurs, Leeds might, of course, attempt to transfer him to another team during the transfer window.
Nevertheless, it is also important to keep in mind that Leeds might need to add to their central defense depth come summertime because Joe Rodon is only on loan, Liam Cooper’s contract expires at the conclusion of this campaign, and Charlie Cresswell is well down the list.
Of course, Wober might assist them in doing that, and during his early months with the club, he did exhibit some potential in the Premier League, which could imply he is a dependable choice for that position.
In light of everything mentioned above, it appears that Leeds United supporters will need to maintain a careful watch on the Wober issue for the next months.
