Anthony Gordon, a player for Newcastle United, has recently revealed what his true favorite position is.
This season, the 23-year-old has been Newcastle United’s Mr. Dependable, only missing two games when Eddie Howe could not choose the winger. And rather than being due to an injury, they were both caused by suspension.
Anthony Gordon has taken a lot of knocks and experienced numerous injury scares, but he has always recovered. In a season where numerous Toon players have missed games due to injuries, Gordon’s greatest attribute has been his availability.
And Eddie Howe has been forced to depend on Gordon to play a variety of roles as a result of that availability.
This season, the former Everton player has appeared in every first three games, and at the international level, he has shown consistency in his play through the middle. He was utilized there when the England Under-21 team won the Euros the previous summer.
Anthony Gordon is asked by Gary Neville which is his favorite position.
Though Gordon has played every position on the field and excelled in each, which is his favorite, how would you describe his preferred position? That’s the question Gary Neville has.
In an interview with The Overlap podcast, Gordon, the number 10 for Newcastle, was questioned if he preferred playing on the left wing, by the former Manchester United defender.
He responded, “Most comfortable, yeah [on the left wing].”
However, that really depends on who you ask. Many people favor me over other players because they have seen me play striker, left, right, 10 – left eight [in the middle], and other positions that I have truly played.
“I had a great time playing nine for England during the Euros.” Left, though, is perhaps where I feel most at ease.
Although Gordon prefers to be on the left of attack, Eddie Howe is now utilizing him on the right for Newcastle. Gordon has spent much of this season playing on the left for Newcastle United. Howe has chosen to deploy Gordon on that side when the Magpies have had most of their attackers available.
Before the 2023–2024 campaign ends, he might be assigned to a different position.
In the match against Tottenham, the England international began on the right, giving Harvey Barnes the opportunity to play on the left. Howe gave him the go-ahead to play at his chosen position, which is also his favorite.
However, Gordon was equally impressive on the right, scoring from open play and providing an assist from a corner.
Gordon shown that, even though it is not his ideal position, he can be even more dangerous on the right wing.
Former coach believes Gordon will change position
But Gordon’s former coach David Unsworth actually believes that he will change position again in the future. He previously stated that he does not see Gordon as a winger. Instead, he thinks he will primarily play through the middle in the coming years.
It will be interesting to see if that comes to fruition, and it is certainly a possibility given how much his finishing has improved. Gordon is more clinical now, and has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season.
He has played as a striker for Newcastle this season, when Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson were both unavailable. That is another example of why Gordon is so valuable to Howe, as he can do a top level job in multiple positions. What a player.
