Jamie Shackleton’s time at Leeds United is undoubtedly drawing to a close, as his departure in July is certain.

The Whites academy alumnus began the season as a mainstay in Daniel Farke’s squad, playing midfield as well as stepping in at both full-back positions when there were no natural options.

However, Shackleton has found it more difficult to get consistent minutes as the season has gone on, and injuries have also caught up to him.

With Ethan Ampadu, a vital player of the team, moving to center-back in Pascal Struijk’s absence, Ilia Gruev, Archie Gray, and Glen Kamara have taken over the two defensive midfield positions. Sam Byram, Junior Firpo, Connor Roberts, and Gray have filled in at full-back.

Shackleton has missed games recently because of an adductor issue that has kept him out for weeks; prior to that, he was battling illness and the birth of their first kid with his girlfriend.

Undoubtedly, football is a cruel industry; nonetheless, Shackleton is nearing the end of his contract, and it seems unjustifiable to extend it at this point. His contract expires on June 30, therefore on July 1 he can join with another company.

Leeds United’s Jamie Shackleton could go this summer?
The 24-year-old, who excelled with Leeds and at Millwall on loan last season, has proven that he is more than capable of playing at the Championship level on a regular basis.

However, the team wants to go beyond that, and at this point in his career, getting regular playing time is crucial.

If Leeds are promoted, it will free up money for salaries; however, if they don’t advance, it will be more evidence that they need to strengthen, which means the players who haven’t played much need to get better.

Although Farke is a huge admirer, this is primarily a commercial choice. Shackleton’s release rather than a new contract makes sense for both sides, and it’s probable he’s already played his last game for the team.
